So, how is Maui Bombers different from the other guided tours, you ask? Let’s get this party started:

  • Length of the Bike Ride – Because the other companies include a tour of Haleakala crater before their biking, they don’t have the time for a long bike ride. Their biking distances range from 15-25 miles. Maui Bombers is only about the bike ride, so we have the time to add distance. Our bike ride is 32 miles.

  • Equipment – As mentioned earlier, single speed beach cruisers are used by the other companies. Again, great bike for coasting down the volcano. Maui Bombers uses top of the line Trek Hybrid bikes with 24 speeds and thinner tires…makes for a much faster and smoother ride. When a group is maintaining the speed limit, there are less traffic passes to make…faster, more fluid bike ride.

  • Group Size – The other companies will max out with 13 bikers per group. Maui Bombers only rides with 6 at the most. Small group =half the time to do traffic passes. Again, faster and more fluid bike bike ride. Smaller groups are more personal too. More fun. More space in the van!  We have the same 15 passenger van as the other companies, but with a max of 6, it’s like luxury.

  • Catered to Experienced Bikers Only – This is the Maui Bomber way. You have to be able to  keep up! If you’re unsure, that’s what the other companies are for.

  • Less Traffic – Enjoy a open & free path straight to the ocean! Our tours have far less traffic then the competition

Hey there!! Aloha future Bombers. Once again, my name is Matt. For the past 5 years I have been guiding tours down majestic Haleakala volcano . I have led over a thousand tours during that time. Each and every one of them was a lot of fun. The groups were fun, the ride was fun, even made a few friends along the way.

During that time, I have consistently had one of the best safety records in the industry, and the best FUN record in the industry. Many on my tours have said it was the best time they had on Maui…highest praise I could ever have imagined.

Although complaints were extremely rare, over the years some wishes were becoming more common. The bikers had a great time, but often people would tell me they wish the bike ride was faster, wish the bike ride was longer, and wish the group was smaller. I couldn’t agree more. Only about once a year, I had a bike tour that was a totally exhilarating, kick-ass high speed bomb down the volcano. The common thread with those tours..only time we had small group of experienced bikers only.

What Makes for a Slow Bike Ride? 3 Factors :

  1. The bikes used are single speed beach cruisers, which allows for inexperienced bikers to participate. Also, there’s no gears for going faster on the flat areas.
  2. By allowing inexperienced bikers, there’s always a great chance one or several in any given group is a bit frightened. And the group can only go as fast as the slowest biker.
  3. Large groups take much longer to get in the bike lane for traffic passes, then get going again.

Again, even slow bike rides are really fun, but I always thought about having a tour for those who want to really bike. Bike fast, and far. And I would continually think of ways that I would do things differently if I had my own company…birth of Maui Bombers.
